The Story of Mary Klein's Death and How She Pushed to Create DC's Medical Aid in Dying Law

Washington D.C.'s law allowing Medical Aid in Dying is threatened by President Trump's desire to take over the District of Columbia. I talk to the widow of one of the first people who used the law.

Hi Everyone,

Eleven States and the District of Columbia now have the right to die with the passage of Medical Aid in Dying Laws. Mary Klein fought for the law in DC and became the first person to use it in 2018, after years of suffering through surgery and chemotherapy to treat her cancer.

She wanted to live and did everything she could to prolong her life. But in the end the pain was too great.

Her widow, Stella Dawson, tells the story of their long marriage and Mary’s ultimate death.

If, as he has threatened to do, President Trump takes over the governance of the District of Columbia, residents may lose the right to choose when to die.
